THE LEGEND OF THE "BEAN"

The String Bean was opened in 1977 in an old Alfie's Fish and Chips building. The abbreviated menu that Joe Gibson and Debbi McSwain aquired in February of 1980 in the purchase of the restaurant had only 4 entrees, 4 vegetables, 2 cold sandwiches and 3 desserts.
Joe and Debbi were businees partners in this and one other venture for almost 3 years before they were married on Valentines Day in 1981. As time passed the menu of The String Bean and their family grew. More entrees, burgers, daily specials and 3 kids all were added to the mix of what has come to be known as "The Bean" to many of their customers. In time Ron Morse and Debbi's brother, Frank, joined the management team.
Ron became an extension of the family; but, on July 1, 2007, during our 30th Anniversary of being in business, was lost in a fatal car crash on his way home from work. In our new location we honor Ron for his friendship and 23 years with us by dedicationg a room right next to the bar (where he would prefer to be) as Ron's Room.
This is the fourth location of the same restaurant over the 33 years we have been in business. Each time we have moved to bigger and/or better digs. This new location will be the first opportunity to expand our bar business and offer a beautiful patio for our customers who desire eating "al fresco" (that's outside for us Texans).
Debbi and her complete crew of seasoned food service professionals (and a few rookies) get a fresh start in our 4th decade of service to the people of North Dallas/Richardson. We are proud to have touched so many lives and given 3 (or 4 depending who you talk to) generations of hungry people someplace to go where they could get a good meal at a fair price served with a willing, smiling face. Now, at last, in Richardson!
